High Desert Free School is primarily located in Bend, Oregon, Cascadia, but is inclusive to the surrounding areas as well.
HDFS is a decentralized network in which skills, information, and knowledge are shared without hierarchy and free of monetary restrictions. We provide an opportunity to share and pass on our knowledge while fostering and nourishing a community of mutual support and autonomy.
We strive to support local economies and alternative systems espousing a DIY ethos whenever possible. We empower folks to challenge the concepts of capitalism and commodification of time. We strive to confront and dismantle the systems of colonialism and global neoliberalism that dominate our society.
Through the practice of sharing and cooperation we can achieve a model for community networking in which everyone can learn and grow regardless of socio-economic standing or perceived power dynamics.
Having a collective learning process that aims for social, ecological and political justice (directed by your own desires, ideas, issues and inquiries) will hopefully spawn a transformation of education wherein information is shared and created- not simply transmitted.
We promote community development and dissemination of information within social centers, infoshops, libraries, student resource centers, co-ops, artist-run spaces, and any collective or co-operative efforts that contribute to a lasting and healthy community environment.
